Graduate Student Orientation Information for Fall 2021

Important Dates

  • Tuesday, May 25, 2021 - Registration System Opens @ 10am (PDT) for Graduates 

REGISTRATION FOR NEW GRADUATE STUDENT ORIENTATION IS NOW CLOSED

  • June 22 - Pre-Orientation Modules 
  • July 31 - Deadline to register for New Graduate Student Orientation.
  • Friday, August 13, 2021 - Graduate NSO Sessions (AM & PM)

Schedule

You will have the option to register for one, 3.5 hour virtual graduate orientation. You can choose the morning or afternoon session. (All times are Pacific Daylight Time)

Graduate NSO Schedule - AM Session

  • 8:30am-8:55am - New Graduate Student Orientation Welcome
    A welcome session with San Diego State University leadership
  • 9:00am-9:50am - Graduate Student Success at SDSU
    A session with representatives from various campus resources to support your success at SDSU
  • 10:00am-10:50am - Master’s Student Panel with A.S. Graduate Student Association
  • 10:00am-10:50am - Doctoral Student Panel with A.S. Graduate Student Association
  • 11:00am-12:00pm - Virtual Information Fair with Campus Partners
    Meet with campus partners to learn more about services and resources available to you as a graduate student

  • 1:30pm-1:55pm  - New Graduate Student Orientation Welcome
    A welcome session with San Diego State University leadership
  • 2:00pm-2:50pm - Graduate Student Success at SDSU
    A session with representatives from various campus resources to support your success at SDSU
  • 3:00pm-3:50pm - Master’s Student Panel with A.S. Graduate Student Association
  • 3:00pm-3:50pm - Doctoral Student Panel with A.S. Graduate Student Association
  • 4:00pm-5:00pm - Virtual Information Fair with Campus Partners
    Meet with campus partners to learn more about services and resources available to you as a graduate student

The one-time First Year Experience (FYE) Fee includes:

The First Year Experience Fee includes Pre-Orientation, Orientation and Graduate student activities. The fee is $250 and will be billed August 5 to your Student Online Account and will be due by August 20.

Pre-Orientation

  • A robust set of pre-orientation modules specifically made for new students, which provide an overview of SDSU’s resources and services through text, photos and videos.
  • A Welcome packet filled with SDSU swag and resources, such as the Student Handbook, will be mailed to the address you supply during registration to support your orientation and transition to SDSU.

New Graduate Student Orientation

  • A graduate student success session with representatives from various campus resources to support your success at SDSU.
  • Graduate Student Panel with the A.S. Graduate Student Association.
  • A virtual information fair with campus resources and services.
  • An optional campus tour led by SDSU Ambassadors.

First-Year Experience Activities

Once you have attended orientation and registered for fall 2021 classes, you will continue to have opportunities to get connected and make SDSU your new home. Below is a list of activities, events and initiatives that will support your success at SDSU!

  • New Student and Family Convocation
  • Welcome Week
  • Aztec Nights
  • Associated Students (A.S.) Graduate Student Association (GSA)
  • Graduate Student Webinar Series
  • Graduate Student Center
    Includes staff support, programming, advocacy and support for SDSU graduate students
  • Graduate Student Seminar Series
    • A monthly seminar series during the academic year (eight events) jointly designed and led by Student Affairs and Campus Diversity and the College of Graduate Studies. Topics will include:

      • Research support
      • Innovation, ideation and invention
      • Dissertation and thesis support
      • Career planning and networking
      • Teaching development
      • Communication with confidence
      • Planning for the second year

First-Year Experience (FYE) Fee Acknowledgement of Payment Terms and Conditions

By completing the SDSU New Student Orientation reservation, I understand that I will be billed for the First Year Experience (FYE) Fee on August 5 (due by August 20) to my Online Student Account and that a portion of this fee helps cover my attendance and participation in New Student Orientation. If I am eligible for Financial Aid, I understand that if I do not have enough aid to pay the FYE fee, a bill will be added to my student account, and I will be responsible for payment due August 20.

I agree to the refund policies of San Diego State University for the First Year Experience fee. If I decide not to complete New Student Orientation for any reason, I understand: 1) the First Year Experience Fee will not be refunded to me and 2) if for some reason, my payment is reversed, I will be billed for the First Year Experience Fee and any other applicable charges related to the payment reversal.
